Narrative Malerei

Narrative Painting

Albert Heiser reveals the progression of his paintings by presenting the images in a sequence of episodes that tell a compelling story.
The progress of each work comes to life through intermediate images displayed together with the paintings. Each motif becomes a journey of discovery – from a work in progress to a completed piece of art. A multiplicity of images that offer a deeper look into the original ideas. The images created along the way are fleeting, but not lost forever. Each tells a unique story about the finished painting.

Exposing the progress of a painting reveals unique aesthetics that narrate space, time, protagonists and landscapes. Each sequence of images invites the viewer to discover something new. The eyes follow from one picture to the next, soaking in the moments as colors, shapes, space and time come together in a holistic experience.

The painted images are presented in a sequence of storytelling episodes that create a motion picture in the mind of the viewer. (The concept is illustrated on the following pages.)
Painting sequences are shown together with the palettes used to mix the paints and the pieces of cloth the artist uses to clean the brushes, absorb excess moisture and blot the wet paint. Intuitively arranged, they serve as test strips for creating the mixtures, gradients, washes and the actual paintings. Viewing them together with the sequence of images and the finished watercolor painting, one can clearly see the interrelationships reflected in the final image.

Albert Heiser’s new film „Narrative Painting“ is presented along with the pictures to show the progression of his artwork in moving images – similar to thumbing through a flip-book. The cinematography, editing, timing, music and narration interpret the paintings in a new perspective.

Heiser reinvents watercolor painting and frees it from the clichés of amateur artists. In a departure from the conventions of watercolor art, he applies pigments using techniques commonly found in oil painting, with multiple layers of color. Dark sections are painted over in bright colors with pigments supplanted by alternate shades.

The methods of applying the paint range from spontaneous to meticulous, from fluent to static. White is used to add highlights and mixtures, washes or glazing. Although the paper substrate is no longer visible, its softness and warmth is retained in the texture. The artist’s motifs, details and perspectives represent a subtle departure from conventional watercolor painting.
